Return of the Ancients

May 20, 2008 on 4:01 pm | In Theory | 1 Comment

I decided pretty early on, that if there would be any heroes in the stories set in this world we’re building, they’d always be among the least of Us in the world order. The forgotten. Those unchanged by technology, (unless it has undermined their survival ). Who in the modern age can still teach us the ancient skills of our FIRST technologies?

Agriculture, Water Irrigation, Weaving, Tool making, textile craft… home medicine… talking with spirits, ancestors… plants…

A brief search on the net returns startling images of people who still dance with the seasons. If you’re lucky enough to share time with an ancient, they never leave your mind. As an animator trying to make a living, this is a dilemma for me. The entertainment world wants my most appealing song n’ dance, they ask me for characters that kids will aspire to be like. That adults can be delighted by in ironic amusement. But, these people’s hearts and minds have been entirely missing from our consciousness until recently. ( Thank gods for European works like “Kiriku”!)

Now, we all know the unspoken “issues” of human rights, and environmental extinction looming over the indigenous folk of the earth. But, I believe there’s more here than Powaquattsi reaveals to us. Oasis’s stories have to be “post-national geographic,” post Godfrey Reggio in that the audience can be trusted to KNOW the plight and circumstances on some level. Koyaanisqatsi- Life out of Balance.

So I’m dreaming up stories that let the character have a full experience of life in a narrative structure. I’ll get into detail in my next post. For now, gaze at your ancient cousins, sisters, brothers and wonder.

Peace -

modern ancients. Pride of Life.

Notes on the search

For months I seemed to be on a hunt. Nose to the ground, focused like a cat after prey.

Basically, the whole search turned out to be to discover the story mind. To get the voice of the comic clear in my head at least.

As a comic series it was not a story in the classical scene. Just a series of mini adventures and discoveries by characters as yet unwritten, still intangible to me.

Since Vaughn and Chris had offered a great deal of help with the project if we could make a short from the material that existed in sketches, I also wanted to get a handle on how I would “direct” such a project, to get the maximum smack and caress to the audiences’ senses, leaving them feeling alive inside our virtual world, the way y’all hope to be, when taking in good fantasy of any kind.

Here’s what I got — as of finishing the image board: Current Technologies inform us that hidden inside the shell of ordinary life, there’s a kind of message for those who can hear it. ” Reality is only a code, and it’s deeper than atoms and earth-cycles, black holes and dna; and we, people of the twenty first and beyond, are already wired to understand it. It’s part of our collective mind anyway. And — eventually, we’d lear how to hack reality itself.

So the question becomes:

If — in the Oasis world, we discover we can think our life into being, by seeing it’s code, than what’s the code for Peace? Human survival? It’s Personal and Public. It’s a macro problem and a micro problem in every thinking being.

- In good story, the perspective of the story’s “teller” is compared against the perspective of the characters we’re actually watching.

- We show the audience what happens, but also “how to see” the story we’re telling them. I have to get to the point of view we’re putting across, and hold onto it throughout this production. It’ll be our lifeline when in doubt.

- In the “Story Mind”, perspective creates context and context creates meaning.

Okay then,
The thread of this short tale is that of the daughter of Azaro. We want to have some stimulating experience with this character that introduces our viewers to this strange world. We want to hi lite the visual richness and potential for greater depth of story(s), if they just keep tuning-in or logging on to our content portal. It should be short. Since a “short” is not a full Story but a Tale, I think we’re headed down the best road by doing this film as a mini narrative that connects to a bigger story… Thus we have Sula Descending. The tale you have in your hands now.

This image board is not the whole story. More like a menu of character revealing
opportunities that hang on the question of what it means to crack the code.

Looking forward to vibing with you guys.

NEO BRONZE

May 13, 2008 on 12:46 pm | In Mind Mapping, Technology, Theory | No Comments

Imagine living in a world where the only way you can access the (means of advancement // mcguffin, etc.) energy needed for technology, was to be a skilled-enuff practitioner of a lost craft?

*In this new bronze age, people of tribal societies have begun connecting with a powerful meme: the idea that existence itself has a code. That it’s representation can be found in the patterns of the world around us. Some neural path within our old limbic system is tickled by this idea.

Blog entry long overdue

Enjoy this archive of our progress so far…

To inherit the visual traditions of my ancestors and make them part of my consciousness my real self is in here someplace. That makes it awfully scary to unveil. Flirts with being seen as human. Hmmmm. Alright. The knights who say “Ni” made me do it. To get past the tree of self revelation.
